Talk:Swap and Compcache

Are you sure that compcache will write the data to SSD on Android? The upstream compcache won't write anything to disk/SDD unless backing swap is set, rather it will compress it and leave it in RAM; it will still take up RAM but only ~50% as much space was taken before. Also Linux usually only swaps out pages that are not frequently or recently used, rather than entire applications (I imagine this is the same on Android), so compcache could shrink the RAM used even of active applications by compressing infrequently used pages of the frequently used app.

Your right, I was trying to keep it straight in my mind between swap and compcache and I confused myself... I will work on a re-write to make it more technically accurate. Thanks. --Pconwell 19:33, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to write this! It was well laid out and easy to understand. GJ. -- ShermanBoyd

Would be good to have a matrix of suggested configurations for each phone. For example, some people say compcache doesn't help (and may make things worse) on 32a. 203.39.203.226 23:49, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Cleaned up article, added the information about /sd-ext/ for CyanogenMod 5.x and some basic troubleshooting. We may want to consider renaming this page to "Swap and Compcache" --Thegenericasian 18:04, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

speed of swap vs compcache

"but some of it is slower than normal RAM due to the CPU time required to compress and decompress the swapped pages."

How speedy is compcache swap compared to Class 6 SD card swap? Does the speed of swap file vary from swap partition?

SD wear

Is worry about SD card wear really valid? ReadyBoost in Windows is constantly writing to SD cards, and they say the drives will last at least 10 years http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tomarcher/archive/2006/06/02/615199.aspx (long after they'll be obsolete. SD cards from 10 years ago only held 64 MB.)

Does the difference between swap partition and swap file have any effect on wear?

Reverted to previous version.

Somebody nuked a large amount of content, specifically the actual code to enable parts of swap and compcache.

Please discuss this matter before making drastic changes. The page as it is is the offically supported information. If you would like to discuss this in detail, please join us in the wiki's IRC channel #cm-wiki ~ pconwell ยท contributions ~ 05:43, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
