Talk:Tethering
Is there a way to let the phone access the internet through USB to a desktop computer that is connected to the net?
Some updating of this page would be great! (by someone who knows what they're doing)
I've just installed CM Android 2.1, and tethering is now included, which would be great to include on this page, along with the location of the setting to enable it, and instructions on how to get other platforms to communicate with it.
Here are instructions for Mac OS 10.5, using a T-Mobile MT3G: On the Mac, go to System Preferences->Network. Hit "+", choose set Interface to "Bluetooth," let Service Name default, or choose your own. On the next screen: Configuration: "Default." Leave Telephone Number, Account Name, and Password empty. Hit "Setup Bluetooth Device..." (and Apply when prompted to save changes).
On the phone, Go to Settings->Wireless & networks. Make sure "Internet tethering" is checked. Then go to Bluetooth settings. Turn Bluetooth on, set the Device name if not already set, and check "Discoverable". This gives you two minutes to discover the device, you may need to recheck the box if you take too long.
On the Mac, on the Bluetooth screen, if your device is not listed, hit "+". This starts the Bluetooth Setup Assistant. Hit "Continue," Mobile Phone," "Continue." Select your phone, hit "Continue." Hit "Continue" again when available. The Mac will give an 8-digit passkey, which you will need to enter on the phone. [Note: at this point, the process has sometimes quit saying that there are no configurable services on the phone; when that happened, rebooting the phone helped]. Once they pair, leave the boxes that say "Access the Internet with your phone's data connection" and "Use device as a network port" checked (I'm not certain the second is necessary). Click "Continue," then "Always Allow."
On the next "Bluetooth Mobile Phone Setup" screen, change "Phone Vendor" to "Generic," and leave Phone Model as "Bluetooth LAN Access." Leave Username, Password, and Phone Number blank. Check "Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar" and don't check "Show Modem status..." Hit "Continue". Hit "Quit" on the "Conclusion" screen.
To connect the Mac to the internet, click on the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar. Under "Devices," pick your device name and "Connect to network" on the submenu. You should see a dotted line appear on the Bluetooth icon. It seems to take maybe 30 seconds to connect to a DNS, so browsers and mail programs may not work immediately.
Note: this is assuming that you haven't paired the phone with the Mac before, that there is no Bluetooth network adapter, etc. If some of these things exist it may be OK, or you may need to delete them and start from scratch.
