Talk:Upgrading From Older CyanogenMod or other rooted ROMs

Is there a reason why the rooted_base image is marked Magic only? I've been using that image for my G1 with no problems at all. --24.2.82.80 09:27, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Political, mostly, but I've been recommending it to everyone for the lack of radio/recovery BS that leads to the re-recovery page. PsychoI3oy 11:06, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Haha I like your wiki-fu, but I didn't originally add #s because it broke mine whenever I added two newlines. --Zaerath 19:27, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes, that's how it works. :)

  1. one
  2. two
  3. three
  4. four
  1. ah!

Yes yes I know, haha, but I didn't want it to do that. On a side note... What are the point of the audio resources? Aren't those optional? If so, should we mark that? --Zaerath 19:32, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Shouldn't you also do a wipe before installing the ADP 1.6 firmware? --83.255.147.44 19:37, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Fixed the links to cm-4.1.999. Also, a wipe isn't a requirement, it's only if you're having problems. --Loonacy 19:41, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Audio resources are optional, they're just different sounds for notifications/ringtones. --Loonacy 20:57, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Upgrading Question

I'm at Cyanogenmod 4.0.4, I have a ext partition on my SD for storing apps on the SD. It looks like I can follow the instructions and have a reasonable chance that the upgrade succeeds (no wipe required). Does this means that after the upgrade everything is like before, all apps and their data are there/untouched ?

I assume there is alway the odd case where I would have to 'wipe' first and that in this case I'd loose everything installed (apps and data) and would have to reinstall all of it again. Except for the data like the address book who are synced to Google servers.

I think it would be useful to add some answers to such questions to this article as probably many others have similar doubts.

I'm unsure exactly what to add to the article to cover all of that, but as long as you don't need to wipe, it's pretty straight-forward, and all your apps should copy over fine; just make sure to open the Market to rebuild your application database, or you will not get application updates. --Zaerath 20:23, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

If we change the 'Note' at the end of the instructions like below, is that correct ?

Notes:

  • The upgrade should leave your already installed applications and data intact. You have to open the Market to rebuild your application database, or you will not get application updates.
  • If your phone hangs on your boot screen (before the Android boot screen), you may need to repeat these steps but wipe before you install the HTC 1.6 image. In this case you will loose your installed applications and data and have to reinstall from scratch.

--markus_b

Looks good markus, i'm adding that now. BTW: Four tildes signs your name with a datestamp. --Loonacy 21:27, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Excellent, thanks :-). I was too lazy to look that tilde thingy up.

However, I suppoe we can now erase this discussion from the page as the subject has been resolved nicely. Markus b 22:01, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

I upgraded to 4.1.999 on htc dream (eu) and run into several troubles:

  1. Slow Performance (fixed by converting to ext3)
  2. The call dialog crashes every time i run it, also on incoming calls i get an unexpected error android.process.acore (fixed by factory reset/wipe)
  3. On every boot i got an unexpected error com.android.calendar(fixed by factory reset/wipe)

i would recommend a wipe for everyone who get a lot of annoying unexpected errors like com.android.xxx while playing with standard apps (calling, contact list, maps etc..) at least for me it works, may i should add a note to troubleshooting ?!

Problem with md5 sum - For both images my md5 sum is coming out to be 7f8b377c5ded60e057140119ab2a3fbd and not 5c8bd07e3abc7718691244f2ea8f5e7b as shown in step 2. I was not sure which one is right, therefore did not edit in the wiki. [punjabi--[[Special:Contributions] 15:55, 22 October 2009 (UTC)]

[edit] Backup

So wait. After we backup and do the upgrade, it starts on the introductory screen for registering with Google. And if I restore from the backup, it reverts everything back to the previous version? What's the best way to upgrade without losing my settings, but without getting lots of instability and Force Closes?

Try copying your user data from data.img back to the phone after you have performed the upgrade. Detailed instructions can be found here: http://blog.9-r.net/android/cyanogen42upgrade --9r 07:46, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Checksum

In regards to step 2:

Download Cyanogen's ROM (v4.2.2 – stable version, updated 10/24):
   * Download: http://n0rp.chemlab.org/android/update-cm-4.2.2-signed.zip
   * Mirror1: http://android.phaseburn.net/mirrors/cyanogen/update-cm-4.2.2-signed.zip
   * MD5Sum: 8f414ffe3c165f3aa27d8ade96c6bc95

That isn't the checksum of those files. I've downloaded the file from both locations, and the checksum I get (md5sum) is 6147a3515758b6d3066526804aa10c42 (same checksum from both locations).--Sstair 19:47, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

I also get 6147a3515758b6d3066526804aa10c42 as the checksum for both files

I am getting 6147a3515758b6d3066526804aa10c42 using Vista. --Atticus

[edit] Alt-A

Recovery didn't give me this option, so I just changed the file name to update.zip, it didn't work, now I don't know what to do. --Atticus

Get a recovery that lets you flash 'any' zip. --PsychoI3oy 13:15, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] In case you only have the option Alt-S to apply update.zip from sdcard,

Ignoring the look of this edit, is it really a good idea? I think it'd be much easier to just upgrade your recovery to one that allows 'any' zip BEFORE flashing the -ota- update than leaving it and having to manually reboot and hope that you've got a firm enough grip on the home button. --PsychoI3oy 13:15, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] A little more explanation in-between steps, or below?

This comment is coming from a grateful noob (thanks for this walkthrough, great stuff!). I just blindly followed this walkthrough and everything worked out, but I wanted to request that some explanation be added of what we're doing to our phones here. For a specific example, what is the 2nd zip file (that varies depending on phone)... is it the radio? is it a factory default image? At the very least, we could add links to explanations, if not short explanations in between steps, or underneath the walkthrough. Thanks!

[edit] How to leave the console?

i found no other way for leaving the console after "clear the dalvik-cache directory" than calling "shutdown". "exit" would not work :-/

Typing 'recovery' in the recovery console will bring the menu back. Works for adb shell but will lock the shell until you reboot. --PsychoI3oy 17:43, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
