Before you do anything — Make a backup
Don't forget to back up your data. If you have synced the device with a Google account, then the contacts, calendar, Gmail, & select other Google-related data will not be lost and will come back after the next sync. However, you should backup anything you want to keep that is not stored on the SD card:
- SMS/MMS messages,
- Call Log,
- Bookmarks,
- Applications; use Titanium Backup or the Astro File Manager, for example,
- Any application data not on the SD card.
It would also be a good idea to backup everything stored on the SD card in the rare case the SD card must be formatted to resolve any major problems.
MyBackup Root, SMS Backup & Restore, and Call Backup & Restore are all free applications that can assist with backing up your data.
Installing the ClockworkMod Recovery
In order to flash any ROM to the stock Motorola Droid, you must install a custom recovery image.
Installing ClockworkMod Recovery with RSD Lite (Windows)
- NOTE: This method works best on Windows XP. If you are having problems on Win7 or Vista, give it a try it on XP.
- Download RSD Lite, the Motorola Drivers & the ClockworkMod Recovery .sbf file:
- Install RSD Lite.
- Once RSD Lite is installed, install the Motorola device drivers.
- Plug in the Motorola Droid to the computer via USB cable.
- Turn the Motorola Droid off while it is plugged in.
- Turn on the Motorola Droid by holding down Power and Up on the D-pad on the device.
- Open the RSD Lite program by right clicking it and selecting Run As Administrator.
- Click on the "..." button next to the filename box and select the .sbf file.
- Once it is selected, hit Start and wait for it to finish flashing the device.
- Watch for "rebooting the device" on the device and press Up on the d-pad before the device boots to "catch the boot" and come right back into the bootloader. "Rebooting the device" appears for a very short period of time; you'll have to be quick.
- Close RSD Lite & disconnect the Motorola Droid. The ClockworkMod Recovery should now be installed on the Motorola Droid.
Installing ClockworkMod Recovery with sbf_flash (Linux & OS X)
- Download sbf_flash & the SPRecovery file:
- Unzip the sbf_flash zipfile.
- Plug in the Motorola Droid to the computer via USB cable.
- Turn the Motorola Droid off while it is plugged in.
- Turn on the Motorola Droid by holding down Power and Up on the D-pad on the device.
- On the computer, open terminal.
- Type the following commands:
chmod +x sbf_flash./sbf_flash recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-sholes.sbf
- The Motorola Droid will reboot on it's own. The ClockworkMod Recovery should now be installed on the Motorola Droid.
